Special Olympics New York offers programming in a variety of settings to best serve athletes, schools, agencies, and local communities.
Below is a simple overview of our three primary program types in our Training Club setting.
Agency Programs
What it is:
An Agency Program operates within a residential or service-based setting, such as a group home or provider agency.
Who can participate:
Participation is limited to individuals connected to that agency or residence.
Public access:
❌ Not open to outside participants.
Example:
A sports team made up of residents from a partner agency or group home program.
School-Based Programs
What it is:
A School-Based Program takes place within a school district or educational setting.
Who can participate:
Participation is limited to students and individuals affiliated with that school.
Public access:
❌ Not open to outside participants.
Example:
A Unified basketball team or school club operating during or after school hours.
Community Programs
What it is:
A Community Program is operated within the local community and is designed to provide broader access to Special Olympics programming.
Who can participate:
Open to eligible athletes and Unified partners who meet the requirements of that specific club or program.
Public access:
✅ Open to the public if participation requirements are met.
Example:
A local training club offering year-round sports opportunities for athletes from the surrounding area.
